Bible Verses for Encouragement

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
ESV, Romans 8:37-39

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Corinthians 5:1

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
John 10:28-29

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
Psalm 91:1-4

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31

Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him In love.
Ephesians 1:4

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18

Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6

no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.
Isaiah 54:17

fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Prayer - by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Prayer

I do not undertake to say
   That literal answers come from Heaven,
But I know this--that when I pray
   A comfort, a support is given
That helps me rise o'er earthly things
As larks soar up on airy wings.

In vain the wise philosopher
   Points out to me my fabric's flaws,
In vain the scientists aver
   That "all things are controlled by laws."
My life has taught me day by day
That it availeth much to pray.

I do not stop to reason out
   The why and how. I do not care,
Since I know this, that when I doubt,
   Life seems a blackness of despair,
The world a tomb; and when I trust,
Sweet blossoms spring up in the dust.

Since I know in the darkest hour,
   If I lift up my soul in prayer,
Some sympathetic, loving Power
   Sends hope and comfort to me there.
Since balm is sent to ease my pain,
What need to argue or explain?

Prayer has a sweet, refining grace,
   It educates the soul and heart.
It lends a lustre to the face,
   And by its elevating art
It gives the mind an inner sight
That brings it near the Infinite.

From our gross selves it helps us rise
   To something which we yet may be.
And so I ask not to be wise,
   If thus my faith is lost to me.
Faith, that with angel's voice and touch
Says, "Pray, for prayer availeth much."

PRAYER - by Christopher Smart

PRAYER

Pray without ceasing (says the Saint)
Nor ever in the spirit faint;
With grace the bloom and faith the root,
The pray'r shall bring eternal fruit.

5 When the great Seer sad news did bring
To Ahab, e'en that wicked king!
Hear what the word of mercy says,
Spare thou the man, "behold he prays".

Our hopes Christ Jesus to elate,
10 Has bid us be importunate,
And with the bustling widow vie,
That triumph'd over tyranny.

'Tis peace, 'tis dignity, 'tis ease,
To bless the Lord upon our knees;
15 The voice and attitude of fear,
For God's own eye, for God's own ear.

Christ Jesus when the Twelve besought
His aid, the PATER NOSTER taught;
By giving glory we begin,
20 And end in deprecating sin.

Then give the glory yet again,
For who wou'd be in grief or pain,
Or brook anxiety and care,
When the quick remedy is pray'r.

Prayer

Prayer
by Théophile Gautier, translated by Robert Sanderson

As a guardian angel, take me under your wing;
Deign to stoop and put out, smiling,
Your maternal hand to my little hand
To support my steps and keep me from falling!

For Jesus the sweet Master, with celestial love,
Suffered little children to come to him;
As an indulgent parent, he submitted to their caresses
And played with them without showing weariness.

O you who resemble those church pictures
Where one sees, on a gold background, august Charity
Preserving from hunger, preserving from cold,
A fair and smiling group sheltered in her folds;

Like the nursling of the Divine mother,
For pity’s sake, lift me to your lap;
Protect me, poor young girl, alone, an orphan,
Whose only hope is in God, whose only hope is in you!

Littell's Living Age - by Hartley Coleridge

Littell's Living Age - by Hartley Coleridge

Be not afraid to pray — to pray is right.
Pray, if thou canst, with hope; but ever pray,
Though hope be weak, or sick with long delay;
Pray in the darkness, if there be no light.
Far is the time, remote from human sight,
When war and discord on the earth shall cease;
Yet every prayer for universal peace
Avails the blessèd time to expedite.
Whateer is good to wish, ask that of Heaven,
Though it be what thou canst not hope to see:
Pray to be perfect, though material leaven
Forbid the spirit so on earth to be;
But if for any wish thou darst not pray,
Then pray to God to cast that wish away.

CHRISTIAN LOVE

CHRISTIAN LOVE

Let men of high conceit and zeal,
Their fervors and their faith proclaim;
If Charity be wanting still,
The rest is but a sounding name.

Patient and meek, she suffers long,
And slowly her resentments rise;
Soon she forgets the greatest wrong,
And soon forgives her enemies.

She drives all malice from her breast,
To ill suspicions ne'er gives way;
But ever hopes and thinks the best,
And as she thinks, is apt to say.

She envies none their better state,
But makes her neighbours bliss her own;
Nor vaunts herself with mind elate,
But still a modest air puts on.

Her neighbour's infamy and ill,
To her no entertainment give;
She's pleas'd to see him prosper still,
And still in good repute to live.

This is the Grace that reigns on high,
And brightly will for ever burn:
When Hope shall in enjoyment die,
And Faith to intuition turn.

Faith * Hope * Love

FAITH - HOPE - LOVE

    There exists faith, hope and love. The greatest of these is love, but the least written and talked about is hope. This page is about hope which is necessary for our Christian life. Without it we will give up and turn away from Christ when sorrows and problems come our way.
    Faith, hope and love work together. They cannot be separated.

LOVE
    Jesus loves me therefore I love Him, and because I love Him I am obedient to Him. If I do not have love I am nothing and all the good works I perform will not please God. Only those good works that I do through love are pleasing to God.
    My actions reveal how much love I have. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres and never fails. The reason my love will not fail is because of my hope which is based on Christ being near me and causing all things to come out right.
    If I have faith, hope and love working together I can love my enemies, bless those who curse me, and do good to those who persecute me. Then my joy is so great that it cannot be expressed in words.

FAITH
    Without faith I cannot please God, for faith in Christ is being sure of what I hope for and certain of what I do not see. Through faith I know that God exists and that He will reward me as I earnestly seek Him.
    God allows problems in my life to test my faith. Therefore, I consider it pure joy when I face many trials because I know that the test of my faith develops perseverance. And perseverance develops character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint me. So, with an active faith, hope and love I can meet the storms and sorrows of life and be victorious over the cares of this world.

HOPE
    Hope is that expectation of the return of Jesus to set up His kingdom and put things right. With hope I can meet the problems of today for I know that tomorrow will be glory with Jesus. Therefore, hope makes it possible for me to rejoice in my sufferings.
    When my life rests on a foundation of faith, hope, and love I am able to give thanks to God and praise Him regardless of what happens. For I know that all things will work together for my good as God uses me to bring honor and glory to His name. "Yahweh is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped.Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him." Psalm 28:7

For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don't see, we wait for it with patience.Romans 8:24,25

Tell it to Jesus

TELL IT TO JESUS

Words and Music by
Edmund Simon Lorenz, 1876
Translated from German to English
by Jeremiah Eames Rankin, 1880

Are you weary, are you heavy hearted?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you grieving over joys departed?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,
He is a friend that's well known.
You've no other such a friend or brother,
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Do the tears flow down your cheeks unbidden?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Have you sins that to men's eyes are hidden?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,
He is a friend that's well known.
You've no other such a friend or brother,
Tell it to Jesus alone.

Do you fear the gathering clouds of sorrow?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,
He is a friend that's well known.
You've no other such a friend or brother,
Tell it to Jesus alone.

Are you troubled at the thought of dying?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
For Christ's coming kingdom are you sighing?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,
He is a friend that's well known.
You've no other such a friend or brother,
Tell it to Jesus alone.
